7 Ways to Get Involved During Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. It is an ideal time to pause and reflect on the millions of Americans who are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease and the individuals who are caring for them. It is also a time for caregivers, friends and families to show their support and get involved in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. 

Why? Because, today, Alzheimer’s affects 47.5 million people worldwide – with 7.7 million new cases diagnosed every year. It is the fifth-leading cause of death for those over 65.

Says Susan Irrgang, RN, NHA, MBA, Administrator at Saunders House in Wynnewood, PA, “In honor of those fighting Alzheimer’s disease and those who love them, the Alzheimer’s Association® hosts events every year on the longest day of the year, June 21, the summer solstice. June 21 was selected as a day of remembrance and response because Alzheimer’s disease is often referred to as “the long goodbye” due to its slow progression and long-lasting physical and emotional effects on all those involved.

“On June 21 and throughout the month of June, the Alzheimer’s Association® asks people all over the world to participate in their Longest Day® events to raise Alzheimer’s awareness and support their activities to fight this public health crisis. We ask you to join us at Saunders House by taking a stand and helping to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease in the next decade.” 

7 Ways You Can Support Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

Susan adds, “There are a variety of simple things you can do to take part in a meaningful way. The Alzheimer’s Association® Take Action site lists several helpful ideas.”

Some examples include:

  1. Being knowledgeable – One of the best ways you can support the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is to be educated about it. Become knowledgeable about the difference between normal aging behavior and dementia, the various stages of Alzheimer’s, and how to provide the best care and support in each stage. 
  2. Raising awareness – Talk to friends, relatives and co-workers and provide them with the facts about Alzheimer’s disease. Today, many of us have our own personal stories to share.
  3. Wearing purple – Wear purple – the official color of The Longest Day® – to show your support. You can order specially designed End Alzheimer’s merchandise here
  4. Making a donation – Every dollar raised will benefit people living with Alzheimer’s in your community. The Alzheimer’s Association® will use the money raised from The Longest Day® to provide care and support for people facing Alzheimer’s through their online forums, free helpline and in-person support groups.
  5. Making a visit – Take some time to visit a friend, relative or neighbor who is living with Alzheimer’s disease.   6. Taking time to care for yourself – If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, it is critically important to take care of yourself as well. Family caregivers have been referred to as the “second victims” of Alzheimer’s disease, as burnout and mental exhaustion can cause serious conditions such as hypertension, heart conditions, stroke and depression. Remember, the best caregivers are those that are physically and mentally healthy themselves.
  7. Participating in a Local Walk to End Alzheimer’s® – Typically held in the fall, The Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is a national event to raise awareness and funds in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
